Twins! A girl and a boy.

My best friend Sharon has two daughters.

The oldest, Amanda, has four children.

The youngest, Sara, could not get pregnant.

One lived in Ohio and the other in Alabama. They were not close — sisters from afar.

Sara worked at a hospital in Alabama as a dietician and spoke with many nurses and physicians about her desire to have children.

One suggested IVF (in vitro fertilization). Sara and her husband decided to try with her eggs and his sperm.

During IVF, mature eggs are collected (retrieved) from ovaries and fertilized by sperm in a lab. Then the fertilized egg (embryo) or eggs (embryos) are transferred to a uterus.*

Even though Sara had a healthy uterus, the time-consuming and expensive procedure did not work.

They tried three times with no success.

Sara was told her eggs were not mature and, therefore not viable. There was no treatment for her condition.
