And that was another reason I reacted so seriously to his alcoholism. My daughter had been an addict for many years by then, and he knew how that tore me apart. Yet my leaving him was "abandonment." I feel guilty at times I didn't stick around and help through his addiction, but he got three more DUIs after we were divorced. My counselor said to leave him and that he was never going to quit. But I went on for another year with him. I truly loved him.
