Hi Michele. I am doing it now even though I have a lovely condo I have not even lived in for 2 years. The thing is I had to strike at the best time for me. I had been looking there for a year. Once I understood the concept, I knew it was for me. Before that, I thought they took all your money and made all these rules. Not true at all. Right now, it's not overpriced but the cost is going up because they are filling up. And we are on the cusp of a recession. People are catching on to the advantages of his lifstyle. The monthly payment for me will be like buying long-term care insurance and paying an HOA. I got the bonus of 10K in upgrades only offered for a short period, although they balked at everything I wanted to upgrade.
I fought for every penny, and the facilities guy told me last week I was the only one that got the bonus and I would also be the last! Seems they didn't like giving me those upgrades! But they offered them to sign on when I did!!
A friend of mine had a stroke at my age and it has been hell for her. She has no one to care for her and now she lives in a place that Medicaid covers. She's run out of money. It's ok but staffing is low and she is at their mercy. When she needs to go to bed she's in a queue waiting for the aides to help her. Sometimes it can be hours.
None of my kids are in a secure enough place in life to take me in right now if something happened to me as her. Plus, I never want to be a burden on them. My parents left me money and I prayed about it and I felt this was what they would like to see me do with some of it. I am thier only child without a partner.
It fit together like a child's puzzle.
Financially, at this time it is affordable. One of the most affordable I have seen. And I looked at a few places. Some turned me away because I didn't have enough money.
I think if people don't care about a fancy indoor/outdoor pool, and gourmet meals they can find one as I did. We don't have a pool but we have a nice community center with workout equipment, pool table, cards, art classes, etc.
I don't live in a fancy metropolitan area but big city fun is less than 20 minutes away. I had several negative comments from family and friends. I hope they have their futures planned out. Or maybe they have an indefinite input of money. My mom was in assisted living for less than 5 years and it was over 500K. She had the money but I sure don't. If I run out of money my place will keep me and they have a benevolence fund and will apply for Medicaid to be sure you don't end up on the street!
I think I will publish this long comment to explain to others that it's doable. I have had some inteesting comments to this article.
One guy said he would rather have his balls ripped off than live in a place like this 😂😂😂😂
And, I apologize for this long response.
