Hi Tim. My mom used to always say, and she was right, there are two sides to every story. Unless you've witnessed her behavior, like Bebe below, it kind of sounds like he's using you as a sounding board and almost hoping you tell him to dump her. He sounds miserable, but I am suspecting it is for another reason all together. Maybe another woman?
