I don’t ask or talk about past relationships on first date but if they are widowed I ask about their partner in general. How long widowed? How long sickness? If they want to talk I think it’s good to show empathy and I can tell if they don’t like talking about it too. One man absolutely hated his dead wife. I didn’t need to hear about that!
