I grew up in the '70s. My sister and I hid a sunlamp bulb connected to the end of an extension cord with a bulb socket on one end in the attic. My mother forbade it but we wanted to be cute and we NEEDED that tan. We wanted boys to think we were pretty. We'd sneak up there and use it whenever we could. If our mom saw our faces were a little red she didn't seem to notice. We were careful not to burn. Now we are in our late 60's and fortunately don't have any skin cancer but we definitely have some wrinkles. Not too bad though. She's also a chain smoker so all we can figure out is the good genes we got from my mom with her perfect white skin have saved us from the damage we did in our teens.

Thanks, mom. We should have listened to you all those years ago. Great article making a great point.
