I learned in nursing school that Alzheimer's patients forget the short term easily (as in the coffee fiasco) and remember old memories. I'm not sure about dementia. If that was the only thing I wouldn't care but I forget a lot of other stuff. I'm not that old so that excuse won't cut it :-)
