I never wanted to learn to SCUBA dive, and this is one of the reasons. The first classmate in our graduating class that died was from an embolism after diving. Very young. He had been a classmate all 12 years of my schooling. That was a long time ago, so everything is probably more manageable but the dangers are the same. I did SNUBA dive once in Aruba, where you are tethered to the boat, and oxygen also comes from there. Kind of Kindergarten diving, but good enough for me.
Maintaining calm and patience in that kind of situation takes a lot. Two was lucky to have Graham with him. I have strong doubts he would have made it out alive otherwise.
