I noticed in a lot of comments that what happened to you is not standard fare with other call resources. I worked in ER so I know what happens. Some are treated very kindly. Others have a rough go of it. These people are already at the end of a very tight wire. It can be really devastating for them. I'm sorry you went through that and also glad you are here. One of my daughters is attempting recovery from addiction and I told her possibly writing on Medium could help her. We'll see.
