I see why editors do that. I go over my articles about 20 times until I run out of things to correct/change. Then I leave it for a few hours and come back and edit some more.

But, that's the problem. Editing your own work that comes from your heart and soul is one thing. Another person getting all over it is another. I could not handle it. I am not very seasoned on Medium so just what is the point of using a different pub? More money? Better audience?

I believe you did the right thing and you should have been thanked for the $20, too.
