Have you watched grandparents, parents, a spouse, siblings or friends age, and develop health issues, dementia, loneliness? It’s not a pretty sight, and for that person it can be very frightening.

Gerascophobia is the fear of getting old.

Some reasons a person develops this:

  • Anxiety. An anxious or high-strung person already.
  • Being Alone. Unable to care for yourself.
  • Retirement. Losing their income.
  • Death of near and dear ones.
  • Seeing the difficulties faced by others getting old.
  • Losing independence. Relying on others for help.
  • Developing health issues.

These all cause a great amount of stress that can make a person completely withdrawn and depressed. It can also cause health problems like high blood pressure or heart disease.

Gerascophobia can be eased with professional intervention and mainly depends on if the phobic can accept aging as a natural part of life. The phobic has to want to let it go. Easier said than done when a person has such great fear.
