I’ve always believed exactly as you write. It’s just a “thing”. We out here must know it doesn’t make sense. But it gives us a moment of satisfaction when we think that bastard is going to suffer in prison, not completely get away with hurting that kid. It’s an idea that serves it’s purpose to “comfort” some of us when the disgusting and atrocious happens to a child.
