My only task the other day was dropping my grandson off at Taco Bell for his afternoon work shift.

Little did I know, a completely unexpected turn of events was about to unfold on a short stretch of road on my way home. A small and helpless animal was about to change the course of my day in a way I could never have anticipated.

I was driving home from Taco Bell and had a choice of two routes. I usually take the other route, but school was letting out, and the traffic was backed up, so I took my second-choice route. The speed limit is 35 mph, but most folks go 40–45 mph because we are all criminals where I live and frequently break the law. Everyone is in a hurry.

I drive past the tennis courts, playground, and dog park with several cars on the road because when school lets out where I live, it is every man for himself. Six schools are in the immediate area, and everyone fights to get their children before midnight.

Suddenly, a little white dog started crossing the road before me, and I slammed on my brakes. Fortunately, everyone behind me managed to control their vehicles as well. Then, I did not see the little dog, and there was nowhere to pull over, so I put on my flashers and got out of my car to…
