Renting is costly too. Its 6 of one, half dozen of the other.

I am moving and will have to make a hefty down payment that I am taking from my investments. It stinks because the market has dropped and I've lost from the money that I had set aside.

But, I am selling my condo and will hopefully get a better price than I would have a few years ago. It evens out. No winner in the end, but at least no loss, either.

You may find this could be the case if you pay more for a home. As in, outbid the other buyers. It could even out in the end, like me. Rent is not cheap.
