Story Nerd: I recently moved to a 55 and older community and found out they are sponsoring 10 Ukrainian families in some of the empty condos. The Ukrainian families we have here are hardworking people with well-behaved children just trying to get settled somewhere so they can take care of themselves. Their lives, the fear, is on all their faces. They have husbands, fathers, brothers, and sons who are fighting. They see no end in sight. Do they want to be living in the US? Probably not. But they are trying and working on independence. Not freeloading as I have heard other residents say. Your article brings that sentiment home. What would we do if we were in their shoes? I'm proud to be able to donate some of the excessive "stuff" I have so they can set up a household. And, I may be getting involved in teaching them English along with a group of residents.
