Addendum: Due to adverse weather conditions at Europe’s Spaceport in French Guiana, the flight VA256 to launch Webb — initially scheduled for Dec. 24 — is being postponed. The new targeted launch date is Dec. 25.

The James Webb Space Telescope will be protected from heat from the Sun and Earth by a sunshade, allowing the observatory to gaze deeper into the infrared sky than any previous telescope. Adriana Manrique Gutierrez, NASA Animator

Some excitement in my family this Christmas has been the planning of the launch of the NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). This will be the world’s most powerful telescope. We have family members that work at Northrop Grumman Headquarters in Washington DC and participated in the PR (Public Relations) for this event.

After blast off, the JWST will “begin the most complex sequence of deployments ever attempted in a single space mission,” explained NASA.

Copy and Paste this Northrop Grumman video to watch a cool simulation of the launch. It’s kind of long ( 12 minutes) but space stuff mesmerizes me.

Per NASA, “The detailed animation above, produced by NASA and the aerospace company Northrop Grumman, shows the immense complexities of the endeavor. The instrument, tightly packed to fit on a rocket, must unfold and unfurl”.

I know 12/25 is Christmas Day and may not get all the views NASA is expecting. However, most people will be home or near a TV or computer so there’s a better chance of watching if you know about it. The times it airs and where it airs are in this information. See below:
