You just described my cat Punkin although she's not been shot. She will beg and plead so loudly at the door that I must let her out. She doesn't go far, but it's her life, and she loves it. She was abandoned at birth, and my daughter found her in a ditch. She nursed her with a dropper until she could eat soft food. She never had a mother and had to fend for herself. If she can't go out due to the landscapers mowing in my community or spraying the grass, I position her cat tree in front of the patio screen door so she can see and smell the outside. (which means no air conditioner for me). I had to get her declawed last year because she was ruining all my furniture, so she can't rip the screen when she jumps on it. (She still brings home her "catches" and climbs trees as well as claws the cat tree as if she had nails) Also, this will sound a bit crazy. I open the garage door, get as many flies in there as possible and close it. Then I let her in the garage, and she spends hours capturing them and eating them. At night I lure moths in, and she loves to chase them down too. I understand where you are coming from. Buddy will have to go out again, so a catio may work, but it's not even close to the woods and trees they love. I'm sorry, some #@&$ did that to him.
